Founded in 1886, WSD serves eligible deaf and hard of hearing children ages birth through twenty-one.  It is responsible for the educational programs of residential and non-residential deaf and hard of hearing students attending the school. Responsibilities

With the support and direction of the Board of Trustees, the Superintendent serves as the chief administrator for the school and oversees its day-to-day operations.  This position is appointed by the Governor, and provides supervision, guidance, and leadership to staff, parents and students.  In conjunction with members of the Board of Trustees, the Superintendent works closely with the Governor and legislators to improve state deaf education policy and services, and collaborates with both public and private organizations to improve learning.   

Other key responsibilities include:

  • Providing a healthy and safe environment for the students and staff by closely monitoring the implementation of policies and procedures designed to ensure student and staff safety
  • Anticipating and assessing the school’s needs in order to develop the appropriate budget requests
  • Assessing the current and future status of the school’s educational programs and ensuring that it is the major conduit for "best practices"
  • Ensuring compliance with local, state and federal laws which affect the education of deaf and hard of hearing students
  • Encouraging students, teachers, parents, and community members to share in the school’s decision-making processes
  • Developing and maintaining effective partnerships and collaborative relationships with public school districts and agencies throughout the state
  • Serving as a facilitator among legislators, special education professionals, parent and staff organizations, school alumni, the Washington State Association of The Deaf and other interested parties for the purpose of developing an integrated statewide educational delivery system.
  • Continuing to develop the school’s post-graduate and occupational preparation programs

Qualifications

Candidates must have the knowledge and experience necessary to provide the highest caliber learning and growth opportunities possible to deaf and hard of hearing students.  They will have previously worked in a school management/administrator role, and will have experience working with the deaf and hard of hearing community.  We are looking for someone with a record of leadership derived from the power of ideas and persuasion who will advocate for students, staff, programs and ideas.  The most successful candidates will also have the communications skills to clearly communicate innovative new ideas and the organizational abilities and leadership competencies to implement them.  A collaborative and open minded approach to communicating with students, parents, educators, staff, and other stakeholders is essential in order to be successful in this role.

Successful candidates must also have:

  • A graduate degree or doctoral degree in Deaf Education, School Administration, or Special Education
  • Experience in deaf education, as well as complying with and implementing rules regarding the education of students with disabilities, including those with behavioral problems
  • Knowledge of P-12 education and the post-graduate learning needs of the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Knowledge of federal law in Special Education, and the ability to quickly learn Washington’s laws and educational framework
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and a successful track record advocating for the deaf culture
  • Experience working with a board or other oversight committee, and demonstrated ability to work with legislators and other educational policy makers

Position Summary: Directly facilitates and/or coordinates District efforts for students with disabilities including ensuring that students receive effective instruction and support services; compliance with state and federal statutes and regulations pertaining to special education; provides supervisory responsibility for evaluation of itinerant staff within the special education area; is a liaison with agencies serving students with disabilities who are placed outside the District; and facilitates and provides problem-solving with building staff and families on matters pertaining to implementation of individual education plans for students.


Experience and Academic Preparation

Formal Education:  Masters Degree minimum; other advanced graduate work preferred

Administrative Experience: at least three years in a school or central office related to position

Teacher Experience:  at least three years

Certificate:  Type D Special Education Director (endorsed in Special Education) Demonstrated leadership experience in collaborative decision making, problem solving and organizational management Administrative experience in an education organization or similar environment

Description: The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with developmental disabilities with cognitive delay, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Currently, Special Olympics Northern California is adding a new full-time staff position, Director of Schools. This individual will be responsible for implementing and managing the overall operation of the Special Olympics Northern California & Nevada Schools Programs. The position will be based in the Special Olympics Northern California & Nevada headquarters offices in Pleasant Hill, California. Program Background: Four years ago Special Olympics formed a unique partnership with the San Mateo County Office of Education to build a comprehensive sports training and competition program integrated into the regular school day for special education students with developmental disabilities. The San Mateo schools program began in 2001 targeting five professionals in five schools serving 50 special-ed students. From virtually no school-day athletics for special-ed students at the start of 2001, the program immediately attracted athletes, interest and support, growing in its first year to 100 students participating. Since then, it has grown steadily to now involve more than 500 students in training, practice and competitions. Sports with regular seasons include track & field, basketball, soccer, and bowling. Other sports and activities include swimming, volleyball, power lifting and, for severely disabled students, motor skills and related activities. Dr. John Mehl, San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools, who has called the program "a phenomenal success. The results of the collaboration (of the district and Special Olympics) have been extraordinary. Hundreds of special needs athletes have benefited immeasurably from the opportunity to compete in sports and grow in self concept and good sportsmanship. This is a program that is worthy of the support of all of us in the Bay Area and beyond. " Integrating Special Olympics into the special-ed curriculum gives students a start in sports that they can carry into adulthood through ongoing (and always free to participants) community Special Olympics programs. As a side benefit, other students in the general school population can learn tolerance, diversity, and civic values  while earning credit toward high school graduation or college entrance by volunteering to help with Special Olympics training and events.

Responsibilities of the Director of Schools will include the following:

  • Implement and manage the Special Olympics Northern California & Nevada Schools Programs
  • Identify appropriate schools within Sacramento, San Francisco and Contra Costa County and work with school district personnel to establish Special Olympics School-day Programs over the next 18 months
  • Serve as a liaison between Special Olympics Northern California and school district personnel
  • Develop and coordinate local school transition programs with local Special Olympics Sports Managers and community programs
  • Assist in managing relationships with Corporate and Foundation sponsors of the Special Olympics Schools Programs
  • Manage the implementation of school-based fundraisers in participating school districts
  • Ensure Special Olympics Schools Programs are in compliance with the rules and regulations of Special Olympics Northern California
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of Special Olympics programs
  • Prepare and monitor the Schools Program budget
  • Perform other duties as assigned
     

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in related field
    California residency
  • Knowledge of California school systems
  • 5 years of teaching or schools administration experience
  • Ability to identify, recruit, train, organize and manage volunteers
  • Superior writing and public speaking skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
  • Efficient with PC based programs, i.e., Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Ability to manage one's time effectively
